Annecy Town Guide

The complete guide to Annecy — the Alpine Venice, crystal-clear lake, medieval Vieille Ville, outdoor adventures, and France's prettiest mountain town.

Annecy — The Pearl of the French Alps

Annecy is the town that makes every visitor consider relocating to France. Its is a pastel watercolour of canals, cobblestones, and flower-decked bridges, while behind it stretches Lac d'Annecy — the cleanest lake in Europe, a sheet of turquoise backed by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. It's almost offensively beautiful.

The Markets

Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings — the old town fills with market stalls selling Savoyard cheeses, mountain honey, saucissons, and local produce. The Sunday market is enormous.

The Lake

Lac d'Annecy is so clean you can see the bottom at 12 metres depth. Swimming is free at beaches around the shore. Rent a paddleboard, kayak, or electric boat. Cycle the 42 km lakeside path (flat, paved, spectacular). Or simply sit at a lakefront café and wonder why you live anywhere else.

Food & Drink

  • — the Savoyard mountain classic
  • — Beaufort, Comté, and Emmental
  • — made in farms around the lake

When to Visit

  • June–September: Lake swimming, cycling, outdoor dining
  • December: Atmospheric Christmas markets in the old town
  • Winter: Ski resorts (La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand, Manigod) are 30–45 minutes away
