Riquewihr Town Guide

The complete guide to Riquewihr — Alsace wine route jewel, medieval fortifications, half-timbered perfection, Riesling, and France's most fairytale village.

Riquewihr — The Wine Route Pearl

Riquewihr is quite possibly the most perfectly preserved medieval village in France — a single main street of half-timbered houses in sherbet colours, enclosed within 13th-century fortifications, surrounded by grand cru vineyards that climb the Vosges foothills. It has survived wars, plagues, and the Franco-German tug-of-war over Alsace essentially unchanged since the 16th century. Some claim it was the inspiration for the village in Disney's Beauty and the Beast — and walking in, you'll believe it.

Food & Drink

  • — Alsace's signature slow-cooked dish
  • — served at breakfast or with Riesling
  • Winstubs (wine taverns) line the main street

When to Visit

  • September–October: Harvest season; vineyards golden, wine flowing
  • December: The Christmas market is enchanting (though crowded)
  • Weekday mornings, any season: The village is quietest before 10 AM
