Saint-Émilion Town Guide

The complete guide to Saint-Émilion — the world's most famous wine village, underground churches, vineyard walks, and the heart of Bordeaux wine country.

Saint-Émilion — The Wine Village

Saint-Émilion has been making wine since Roman times — over 2,000 years — and the results speak for themselves. This tiny medieval village of just 1,800 souls, surrounded by 5,400 hectares of vineyards, produces some of the most celebrated (and expensive) wines on earth. The entire jurisdiction — village and vineyards — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first wine-producing landscape ever to receive the designation.

Food & Drink

  • — made here since 1620
  • Wine tastings at dozens of châteaux — many within walking distance of the village
  • — a Bordeaux regional specialty

When to Visit

  • September–October: Harvest season () — the vineyards are at their most active
  • May–June: Vines in full leaf, warm weather, fewer crowds
  • Portes Ouvertes (Open Doors) weekends: Châteaux open to visitors — check dates
